Insulation for South Fork Cabins, Homes & Shops

Spray foam, Rockwool, and cellulose for South Fork and Rio Grande County, at about 8,200 feet where the South Fork meets the Rio Grande. Our crew comes over Wolf Creek Pass from Pagosa Springs, and Foam Insulation Specialists has been insulating mountain buildings since 2000.

Over Wolf Creek Pass to South Fork

South Fork is about 44 miles from our Pagosa Springs shop, straight over Wolf Creek Pass on US-160. In good weather that's a little over an hour. In a storm the pass sets the schedule: it tops out near 10,900 feet and gets some of the heaviest snow in Colorado, so winter jobs on this side get planned around the forecast. If a storm moves a date, we'll tell you up front.

That's also why fall is the time to call. A walkthrough in September or October means the work can get done before the pass gets serious.

8,200-foot winters and second homes

South Fork sits about a thousand feet higher than Pagosa Springs, and the river valley holds cold air on clear winter nights. Many of the houses here are cabins and second homes along the river and up the side roads, and a lot of them sit empty for weeks at a stretch.

That's when the weak spots show up: a pipe in an outside wall that freezes, a crawlspace open to the wind, a floor that never warms up, a draft where an addition meets the original cabin. We insulate with the empty weeks in mind, keeping the plumbing inside a sealed crawlspace and air sealing the ceiling so the heat that's set low still holds. Our attic insulation page covers the ceiling side.

Common South Fork jobs

Crawlspaces under river cabins

Closed-cell foam on the stem walls and rim joist, and a sealed vapor barrier across the ground. It's the most common fix for frozen pipes and cold floors.

Log and timber homes

Log walls are what they are. The roof, the floor system, and the crawlspace are usually where the heat is going, and that's where we focus.

Garages for snow gear

Steel garages and shops holding plows, sleds, and trucks. Closed-cell stops the drip off cold metal. See metal building insulation.

What we install in Rio Grande County

Icynene spray foam for rooflines, vaulted cabin ceilings, and rim joists. Rockwool batts for quiet rooms in a house full of guests. Blown-in cellulose for older attics that have settled thin. Full details on the insulation services page.

South Fork insulation questions

Do you come over Wolf Creek Pass in winter?

Yes, when the pass is open and safe to drive. Winter dates depend on the weather, and we'll tell you if a storm moves a job. Fall is the easiest time to schedule.

What helps a South Fork cabin that sits empty?

Start under the house: seal and insulate the crawlspace and rim joist so the plumbing and floors stay warmer with the heat turned down. Then air seal the ceiling. We'll give you the order on the walkthrough.

Do you work in Del Norte and the rest of Rio Grande County?

South Fork is the center of our Rio Grande County work, and we'll look at jobs down the valley toward Del Norte too. Call and ask.
