Spray Foam & Insulation for Durango and La Plata County
Icynene spray foam, Rockwool, and blown-in cellulose for Durango homes, Animas Valley properties, and mountain places up toward Purgatory. Foam Insulation Specialists has insulated southwest Colorado buildings since 2000, and our crew covers Durango from the shop in Pagosa Springs.

Durango's mix of old and new houses
Durango has nearly every kind of house we insulate. Older homes near downtown and along the East Third Avenue side of town, often with plaster walls and little in the attic. Newer construction in Three Springs and on the edges of town. Ranch houses and acreage up the Animas Valley toward Hermosa. Cabins and condos up toward Purgatory, where the snow is a different animal.
Each of those needs something different. An old house usually needs air sealing and a blown-in cellulose top-up more than it needs foam. A new build is the time to put spray foam on the shell while the framing is open. A house with cold floors needs its crawlspace looked at first.
Valley cold and mountain snow
At about 6,500 feet, town is the lowest place we work, but the Animas Valley holds cold air on clear winter nights, and the mesas catch the wind. Head north on US-550 toward Purgatory and you climb past 8,000 feet into a snowpack that sits on roofs for months.
Across all of it we see the same three complaints: ice dams at the eaves, cold rooms over garages, and pipes that freeze in a crawlspace. Ice dams start with warm air leaking into the roof, so the fix starts with air sealing; our attic insulation page walks through it.
A Pagosa Springs crew for your Durango project
Durango is about 60 miles west of our shop on US-160, a little over an hour through Bayfield. Here's what comes with the drive: a company that has been insulating this region since 2000; Michael Richline, who acquired FIS in 2026 and leads it; BBB A+ accreditation; and a 5.0-star Google rating from 12 reviews.
You also get a straight answer. If Rockwool or a cellulose top-up does the job for less than foam, we'll say so. Steel shops and commercial buildings get closed-cell to stop condensation; see metal building insulation. The full list is on our insulation services page.
Rentals and second homes
Durango has plenty of rentals and second homes, from condos up toward Purgatory to houses in town rented by the season. Owners and property managers tend to want the same things: fewer frozen-pipe calls, fewer comfort complaints from guests, and a heating bill that makes sense. Sealing the crawlspace and rim joist, then air sealing and topping up the attic, usually does more for those than anything else we install.
