Icynene spray foam: open & closed cell

Icynene spray foam insulation is a high-performance insulation that expands as it's sprayed, filling gaps, cracks, and penetrations to create a continuous air seal. That air seal is what cuts drafts and energy loss in a mountain home, where wind and big temperature swings find every hole in the envelope.

 

Icynene uses a water-blown polyurethane formulation that incorporates renewable castor oil. Once it's applied and fully cured, it becomes a stable, inert material. We install both open-cell and closed-cell Icynene, and we pick per building rather than pushing one product.

 

 

Closed-cell Icynene

Closed-cell is the dense, rigid foam. It gives a higher R-value per inch, acts as an air barrier and a vapor barrier, resists moisture and condensation, and adds rigidity to walls and roofs. It's the one we reach for on exterior walls, rooflines, crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings, and anywhere moisture control matters.

 

 

Open-cell Icynene

Open-cell is the lighter, softer foam. It expands much more, so it fills odd cavities and hard-to-reach spots, and its open structure absorbs sound. It still air seals, and it allows some moisture vapor movement, which suits many interior walls and attic applications. It's also the more cost-effective of the two for a large area.

 

Neither one sheds loose fibers or dust the way fiberglass and cellulose can, and a cured foam job helps block outdoor air, allergens, and moisture from moving through the envelope. We seal around windows, doors, and penetrations as part of the install, not as an add-on.

 

 

Rockwool & mineral wool

 

Rockwool mineral wool

Mineral wool, also known as rock wool, is a dense batt known for fire resistance and sound control. It holds its shape, shrugs off moisture better than fiberglass, and it's what we use for soundproofing walls and stairways and for hybrid jobs where foam seals the envelope and batts fill the rest. FIS is a Rockwool partner.

Blown-in cellulose & fiberglass

Cellulose is made mostly from recycled paper treated for fire resistance. Blown into an attic, it covers joists evenly and quiets the room below, and it's the straightforward, lower-cost way to top up an attic that's thin or settled. Fiberglass, in batts or blown-in, is the dependable, widely used option for walls, ceilings, and attics when foam isn't the right fit.

Crawlspaces & rim joists

The rim joist and the crawlspace are where a lot of a house's heat walks out. We insulate both with closed-cell foam, and where the crawl needs it we install a full encapsulation: foamed stem walls plus a sealed vapor barrier across the ground.

Metal buildings, shops & ag

Bare steel sweats when warm inside air hits a cold panel. Closed-cell spray foam on the purlins and wall girts stops that condensation and makes a shop or barn usable through a Pagosa winter. We insulate steel shops, garages, pole barns, and ag buildings, and we'll tell you straight if foam isn't the right call for the building.

Call or send the form, and we set a free walkthrough. We look at the building, talk through open-cell, closed-cell, Rockwool, cellulose, or fiberglass, and follow up with a written quote by phone. The shop is open Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm Mountain, at 412 Bastille Dr, Ste 1B in Pagosa Springs.
