What Rockwool mineral wool is

Rockwool is a brand of mineral wool, also called rock wool or stone wool. It's made from melted stone spun into fibers and pressed into dense batts. The result is heavier and stiffer than fiberglass, and it behaves differently once it's in the wall.

It friction-fits between studs and joists and holds its shape, so it doesn't slump in the cavity over time. It shrugs off moisture better than fiberglass, and it's known for fire resistance and sound control. That combination is why we reach for it in particular spots, not everywhere.

Where Rockwool earns its place

Sound control between rooms

Dense batts in interior walls, in floors between levels, and around stairways cut the noise that travels through a house. Bedrooms off a great room, a home office, a media room, and the wall to the garage are the usual spots.

Fire resistance

Mineral wool is a common pick for the wall between a house and an attached garage, mechanical rooms, and shared walls in duplexes and rentals. We'll go over what your building needs on the walkthrough.

Rooms that see moisture

Because it handles moisture better than fiberglass and stays put, it suits bathrooms, laundry rooms, and lower-level walls where a batt needs to keep its shape for years.

Rockwool and spray foam on the same job

Some of the best-performing houses we insulate use both. Closed-cell spray foam goes on the exterior walls and the roofline, where an air seal and a vapor barrier do the heavy lifting. Rockwool goes in the interior walls and floors, where the job is quiet rooms and fire resistance, not air sealing. You get a tight shell without paying foam prices for every wall in the house.

It's the same mix one of our customers describes below: spray foam on the ceilings, mineral wool batts for the walls and stairways. On a new build we time the batts for after rough-ins and before drywall, and we work around the rest of the project's schedule. More on the foam side is on our spray foam insulation page.

Rockwool vs fiberglass batts

Both come as batts and both go in the same cavities. Fiberglass is the dependable, lower-cost option, and we still install it when it fits the job and the budget. Rockwool costs more, and the difference buys a denser batt that holds its shape, better sound control, better moisture tolerance, and more fire resistance.

If none of that matters for a given wall, fiberglass may be the right spend, and we'll tell you. If the wall backs up to a bedroom, a garage, or a bathroom, Rockwool is usually worth it.

Ceilings: 5" Icynene Plus Spray Foam, certified healthy, and to code expectation. Class three vapor barrier that is hydrophobic. Window and door areas well insulated. R30 Mineral Wool Batts for soundproofing walls and all stairways. They went above and beyond by checking on my property and cleaning up after themselves and doing everything requested. Rockwool questions

Is Rockwool the same thing as mineral wool?

Rockwool is a brand. Mineral wool is the material, and you'll also hear it called rock wool or stone wool. FIS is a Rockwool partner.

Is Rockwool better than spray foam?

They do different jobs. Spray foam air seals and batts don't. Closed-cell foam is the better choice on exterior walls and rooflines; Rockwool is the better choice inside the shell, for sound control and fire resistance. Plenty of houses get both.

Can you add Rockwool to a house that's already built?

Where the cavity is open, yes: an unfinished basement ceiling, a garage wall before drywall, or a remodel with the walls opened up. Finished walls are a different job, and we'll tell you on the walkthrough what's practical.

Does Rockwool cost more than fiberglass?

Yes, it costs more than fiberglass batts. We price it per job after the free walkthrough, and if fiberglass is the better spend for a particular wall, we'll say so.
